From the opening lines, Larry Matthews' novel, Butterfly Knife, grabs the reader's attention with a style reminiscent of the forefathers of the genre, Chandler, Hammett and Cain with the type of sharp wording, crisp dialogue and vivid descriptions that flow easy like a smooth Tennessee whiskey then kicks you in the throat when you least expect it. Bravo!
This is one of those books that sucks you in and holds you captive until its over. Neat look into the world of investigative journalism. Larry Matthews is a true storyteller!
You have to love a good, solid thriller. They're the nouveau noir of our generation; the literary jazz of Gen-Xers.
Butterfly Knife uses many of the gold-plated standards of thrillerdom and still manages to twist its readers around with a surprise or two.
Larry Matthews has a bit of a sick imagination, and the uses he gets up to with a butterfly knife might leave some readers wide-eyed and a bit shell-shocked, but only the best thrillers can do that to a jaded and cynical readership.
I just finished reading Larry Matthews first Dave Haggard thriller Butterfly Knife. It was a roller coaster ride from beginning to end. I can't wait to read the next one in the series. His character Dave Haggard is so down to earth real, you can't help but feel like you are part of the story. I won't tell you the ending, but it left me wanting more. I think Matthews has created a great character here, and judging from his own background as a journalist, I can see why he has won awards. Double thumbs up on this exciting novel.
This is the first book I've read from this author and I really enjoyed it. I grew up in Washington, DC so it was particularly fun for me to be able to visualize almost all locations used. It is well written and the story keeps moving. I will read more by this author.
Reasonably well written, believable and kept me involved. I wanted to know more at the end of the book, but it ended "right." I will look for more by this author!
Fast-paced, for the most part quite well-written (although "wacked" just irritated me) and with characters that are believable to those of us who watch crime shows on TV. You know what I mean, it's like you know them, but what you really know is the "type" as portrayed on police shows. That's not a bad thing, it make reading the book even easier because you're on solid ground. Uncommon story line, good descriptions and portrayal of atmosphere all created an entertaining read.
